Creating a Bentwood Box

Creating a bentwood box is a long, involved process. Follow David as he starts with a big, beautiful cedar board and transforms it into a bentwood box.

The box is measured and marked on a solid cedar board,
then the first cuts for bending the corners are made.

Making a Box
The initial cut is shaped by carving to
provide relief for the bending.

Each corner is steamed to soften
the wood fibers for bending.

After steaming, each corner is carefully bent,
clamped into position and allowed to dry.

Once the box has dried in it's final shape,
the outside corners are cleaned up.
